Be a Voluntary Occupational Therapist Assistant

Ask a Question
Be a Voluntary Occupational Therapist Assistant

What does a voluntary occupational therapist assistant do?

Occupational therapists help people carry out everyday activities and live as independently as they can. This might involve working with someone recovering from a stroke, an older person adapting to reduced mobility, or a person managing a long term mental health condition or learning disability.

As a volunteer assistant, you support qualified occupational therapists in their work with patients and clients. The exact tasks vary depending on where you volunteer, but the aim is always the same: helping people get on with their daily lives.

You might help prepare materials for therapy sessions, accompany therapists on home visits, assist with group activities, or spend time with patients while they practise skills. Some volunteers help with administrative tasks or equipment checks. Others offer companionship and reassurance, helping to create a welcoming environment for patients.

Where can you volunteer?

Opportunities exist in several settings across the NHS and voluntary sector. These include:

  • Hospitals, including rehabilitation wards and outpatient departments
  • Community health teams that visit people in their own homes
  • Day centres and social care settings
  • Mental health services
  • Charities working with specific groups, such as older people or those with disabilities

Availability depends on your local area. Some NHS trusts list volunteering roles on their websites, though advertised positions for occupational therapy assistants can be limited. It is worth contacting individual departments or teams directly to ask about opportunities. Local councils and charities are also worth approaching.

Most placements ask for a regular commitment, often a few hours each week. This helps build trust with staff and patients, and gives you a proper sense of the work.

Your situation may be slightly different. ask a question below ↓ and our editorial team will reply with our advice.

Who is suited to this role?

Certain qualities make a real difference in this role. Patience matters, as progress can be slow and setbacks are common. You need to be comfortable around people who may be unwell, distressed, or living with disabilities. You do not need qualifications to volunteer.

Good communication skills are useful. You will be listening as much as talking, and you need to respect boundaries and confidentiality. Flexibility helps too, since sessions do not always go to plan.

Previous experience with disabled or vulnerable people is an advantage, though not always required. What matters most is a genuine willingness to help and an ability to stay calm under pressure.

Many volunteer roles require you to pass a Disclosure and Barring Service check before starting, particularly those involving direct contact with patients. The organisation you apply to will arrange this. You may also need to attend an induction or complete some basic training.

Why consider volunteering?

For some people, this is a first step towards a career in occupational therapy or a related health profession. Spending time alongside qualified therapists gives you a realistic view of the work and helps you decide if it suits you. It also strengthens applications for courses or paid roles.

Others volunteer simply because they find the work meaningful. Being part of a care team, even in a small way, can be satisfying. You meet people from different backgrounds and see the difference that practical support makes.

Volunteering can bring a sense of structure and purpose, especially if you are returning to work after a break or looking to re-engage with your community.

If you are interested, think about what settings appeal to you and where your skills might be useful. Then contact local NHS trusts, councils, or charities that align with your interests to find out what roles are available and how to apply.

@Erly Your background sounds ideal for an OT route. Have a look at West London NHS Trust and Hounslow and Richmond Community Healthcare, as both run volunteer schemes and sometimes take shadowing requests directly through their OT departments. It's also worth ringing local care homes and rehab units in Isleworth and Brentford, since many have in-house OTs who can host informal shadowing without going through a formal scheme. The RCOT website lists registered OTs in your area too, which is handy for cold emailing.

Hi, I am willing to shadow an occupational therapy assistant to learn ang gain more experience and knowledge about occupational therapy. I completed my BSc Hons Health and Social Care degree in January 2025 and want to pursue my career in Master's Occupational Therapy. I have been working as a Care assistant in a care home for over nine years in the dementia and elderly care units, where I gained some experience, such as moving and handling, supporting people to become independent in their daily activities related to occupational therapy. I am from the Hounslow TW3 area and am willing to volunteer in this area to manage my job and my future career starting in January. I would appreciate it if you could kindly help me with my volunteering. Thank you

I’m passionate about becoming an Occupational Therapist because I want to make a real difference in people’s lives, especially children and young people with disabilities. I’m a naturally active and hands-on person, im a big advocate for the importance of physical activity and movement to support development, independence, and confidence, I’m committed, compassionate, and eager to learn more about how occupational therapy can help people live fuller, more independent lives. Volunteering would give me a valuable opportunity to build skills, observe professionals, and contribute to a meaningful cause. I really hope that I hear back, Thank you!

I’m excited to hear back from you! Thank you.

I currently work as an accountant (I used to be in fashion industry) but have recently looked after an OT with long Covid and after hearing what she does and helping her I've realised I have a lot of attributes and knowledge that could be better used as an OT.

I'm currently looking into master courses and would love to volunteer to find out more about the role but to also give back to society. I'm in Brighton so any voluntary work there would be great. I'm driven, analytical, tenacious, optimistic and love getting results. I'm really looking forward to any opportunity you can put my way. I do work Monday to Friday so any weekend work would be brilliant. Thanks

Occupational therapy clinics, both private and NHS, tend not to advertise voluntary opportunities, so the easiest thing to do is to search "Occupational Therapy East London" or similar and contact organisations directly.

I have taken on an internship module to help progress with the future and I am looking to take on either an internship or voluntary work as a occupational therapy support worker. This is the first webpage I have been able to find information, is there anywhere that may be of interest for me and in my area. Thank you

I am intrested in becoming a occupational therapy support worker and am wondering what the best route would be to gain a posistion it it. I have experience with children and SEN. I was thinking of volunteering to gain experience and see if the job is or me. How could I gain voluntary experience?
OTA - Holly 07/10/2016 at 3:49 pm
If you contact local hospital switchboard and ask for either Therapy department and ask about the experience or contact HR if looking for a job position or NHS Job website search NHS Jobs on google.

I work as a OTA and can apply through NHS Jobs

I am having to complete work experience later this school year (June/July time) and I would either like to be an occupational or cognitive therapist. Would this be a good idea for me to do work experience as. If not, do you have any ideas as to where I could do it?

Hi there I'm currently studying OT in Sydney, Australia (in third year of a four year undergraduate degree). I will be in Coventry for approximately 6 weeks in January/ February 2017.
How do you suggest I go about gaining some voluntary experience when I'm living there? Are there any clinics or hospital email addresses you could suggest I get in contact with before I arrive?
I have all medical checks required for Australian hospitals and have already completed 1000 clinical hours required for my degree.

Many thanks!
CommunityHelpers Editor 25/08/2016 at 11:30 am
Try contacting your local NHS to see if there's any voluntary work available. You might also want to search for private OT clinics on the Internet and make some contact individually.

I am currently an A-level student and want to go to study occupational therapy at university but wanted to get some experience before hand. I live in Leicester.
Is there any chance that I an get the experience here?
CommunityHelpers Editor 11/01/2016 at 12:32 pm
We don't take on volunteers, this site simply offers advice on volunteering in various fields. In legal or health roles however, volunteers are usually expected to be over 18.
Sally 10/01/2016 at 9:47 am
Can you please advise at what age you take on volunteers?
PC 09/12/2015 at 2:33 pm
hi, I live in Kent and am looking for an opportunity to shadow an OT for a few day, I have contacted local clinic and hospitals, however for confidential reason they cannot. Help

I am a SENCO at a school in Medway with a very high SEN count. We are desperately seeking an OT who i willing to either volunteer for experience or is looking for 1 day a week regular work. Would need transport and up to date DBS/CRB check.
CommunityHelpers Editor 12/11/2015 at 2:10 pm
We don't know which ones specifically take volunteers, you would need to approach each one individually.
Mannie 11/11/2015 at 3:32 pm
Hi,
I would love to volunteer as an OTA in order to get into my OT at masters level. I already work in the care environment but need to shadow an OT for a few days. Which hospitals in London or Essex are willing to take on OTA volunteers as it seems that not all hospitals are willing to take on volunteers to confidentiality issues etc. Thanks
Lauren 09/10/2015 at 9:09 pm
Hi, I am planning on studying Occuaptional Therapy at university September 2016. However, to gain entry I must complete 2 days shadowing an occupational therapist. I have tried the trusts but the trusts have told me they do not allow shadowing an OT due to confidentiality reasons. Is there any other way I could get this experience as it is essential criteria to gain entry to university?

When you know which area of the UK you will be moving to, you should contact local OT departments/clinics of NHS hospitals and primary care trusts in that location. There may also be private clinics where volunteers are accepted - they can also usually be found on the Internet.

Hello,

I am looking to gain shadowing experience with an Occupational therapist based in Coventry. Is this possible? It would mean an awful lot to me to actually get up close experience in this field before committing myself to postgraduate study. I currently work Mon-Fri 9-5, would it be possible to squeeze in a couple of hours shadowing at any stage, even at weekends?

Thank you for your time and I look forward to your reply.
CommunityHelpers Editor 21/08/2015 at 2:29 pm
To gain actual clinical experience you may have to undertake a specific OT qualification. However, it may be worth contacting your local NHS trust and any private OT clinics to see if there are any voluntary opportunities.

keely 30/01/2012 at 2:38 pm
Hi,

I dont think I am meant to become an occupational therapist as i dont have enough empathy when it comes to care. I am very self motivated and I like to live my life to the full as well as trying to influence others around me to do the same. As I have a degree in Architectural design and spatial desing, I would like to get involved with a specific area within OT and thats environmental adaption. I majored in disability through design at Univeristy and based my thesis on whether designers truly facilitate for disabled users. I am very passionate about creating a space thats adaptable for all users, although I know this may be difficult especially when disabilities collide with each other.

Can you please help and guide me to a point of contact or any other information about how to persue this new adventure?
CommunityHelpers 14/09/2011 at 9:59 am
